Galway Councillor and former Castlerea prisoner Michael Fahy says the two Romanian men that escaped from their Roscommon prison this week are likely to have received assistance.

The Ardrahan Cllr was jailed for a year for allegedly obtaining 7 thousand euro by false pretences from the County Council in 2002.

However the Court of Criminal Appeal quashed the conviction in June 2011.

His comments on his experience of the facility come after two Romanian brothers escaped from Castlerea Prison on Sunday night.

They had been serving sentences of 22 and 23 months respectively for charges of theft and criminal damage, after they damaged and stole money from parking meters in Galway city.

The men were due to be released in April and were being detained in the semi-open Grove residential area.

Speaking on Galway Talks, Cllr Michael Fahy says the men would have needed help to scale a metal fence surrounding the area as well as a perimeter wall.
