Seánín and Hildegarde – FG leadership long-shots

Boylesports recently issued a press release with odds on who will become the next Fine Gael leader after Leo Varadkar.

Unsurprisingly, the grassroots members’ favourite during the previous contest to succeed Enda Kenny – but not preferred choice of councillors and Oireachtas members – Simon Coveney, topped the list at 4/7.

Surprisingly, Seán Kyne, the former Galway West TD, now Senator, was included in the list, albeit at odds of 40/1.

Current Galway West Fine Gael TD, and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, with a voice but not a vote at Cabinet, Hildegarde Naughton, wasn’t quoted any odds at all.

When this fairly glaring omission (the likelihood of a Senator becoming leader ahead of a TD is fairly remote!) was pointed out to the bookmaker, it replied almost immediately to Bradley Bytes to say that she had been introduced at 33/1.

Neither odds for Seánín or Hildegarde suggest they have a hope of taking over the leadership reins from Leo but according to the bookies, the latter has a better chance than the former. Hildegarde for Taoiseach, anyone?
