‘Seagull’ at Coole the centrepiece of Druid’s summer programme

Druid Theatre will present a large-scale outdoor production of Thomas Kilroy’s The Seagull (after Chekhov) at Coole Park in August.

It’s a busy summer for Druid, which next month will partner with RTÉ Radio’s Drama on One for a radio play starring Marie Mullen and directed by Garry Hynes – information isn’t yet available on this.

The Druid Debuts, a rehearsed series of readings of new scripts, which normally take place in July in conjunction with the Arts Festival, will be presented online this month and next.

And Druid’s Coole Park Poetry Series is also continuing online, with a different poem from the contemporary Irish canon being premiered each Wednesday throughout the summer.

This production of The Seagull marks Druid’s return to Coole Park where the company premiered its series of one-act plays by Lady Gregory in September. The cast includes Jack Gleeson, Eileen Walsh, Marie Mullen, Marty Rea, Brian Doherty, Liam Heslin, Bosco Hogan, Bláithín MacGabhann, Agnes O’Casey and John Olohan.

“Despite the challenges of the past year, I’m proud we have remained connected to our audiences and to our colleagues in the Irish theatre industry,” said Druid’s Artistic Director Garry Hynes. “It’s a particular privilege to be working with Thomas Kilroy on his adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull.”
