Schools merger a ‘land grab in disguise’ says former principal
Galway City Tribune – A former principal of St Mary’s College has blasted its planned merger with Our Lady’s College – insisting that property speculation was the key motivation behind the Diocesan decision.
Ciaran Murphy, who retired from the school in 2016, said in his experience there had been no direction from the Diocese about education in city schools for at least a decade.
He claimed the merger between St Mary’s and Our Lady’s College – itself an amalgamation between the Mercy and the Presentation – “has nothing to do with the furtherance of education, and everything to do with property consolidation/speculation from an institution second only to the Comer brothers in its property portfolio”.
“To pass this latest ‘development’ off as primarily beneficial to the prospective students of a new entity is distinctly disingenuous,” Mr Murphy said.
