School will close if water cut

THE PRINCIPAL of a primary school in the city has warned that she will be forced to close the school, leaving hundreds of children without classes, if the schools’ water supply is cut off.

Mary Smith, the Principal of Scoil Chaitriona in Renmore, says the school will struggle to meet the estimated €5,000 water bill it is facing as a result of what she called “unfair” water charges levied against it, but if the school’s water supply is cut off as a result of the non payment, she will be left with no option but to lock the doors.

“The bills are coming on a regular basis, probably every couple of months and we’ve accumulated a folder full of them but so far we haven’t paid them because we felt it was very unfair.

“We are a green school and we try to conserve water as much as possible but the school was built more than 30 years ago and we were told we probably have a leak. The Council were supposed to come to fix the leak but we haven’t heard anything from them yet.
