School is a rat trap

TEACHERS and pupils at a rat infested school in East Galway would be willing to move into prefabs rather than stay another minute in squalor.
However, their main priority is for a new school to be built to replace the dilapidated Eglish National School near Ahascragh. The 109 year old school should be condemned, according to local politicians who are campaigning for temporary accommodation to be provided at the school.
And serious pressure is mounting on the Department of Education to provide a new school in Eglish as pupils are being taught in appalling conditions. School principal Elizabeth Mulry fears for the safety of the 48 pupils and says that every day brings the prospect of one of them getting injured. T
he school recently had an infestation of rats and a pest control company was employed to deal with the situation. In fact some of the bait is still visible in parts of the two classroom school.
Such is the dampness within the school that snails on the ceiling are a regular feature while classes are being conducted. When the pupils attend school each morning, they are greeted by the stench of mould and dampness and have to tolerate this for the duration of their time in class.
