‘Savour the tune, savour the tune,” was the advice that Leitrim fiddle player Ben Lennon gave to a young Conamara accordion player, Johnny Óg Connolly when they played together in Tigh Hughes, An Spidéal, many years ago.

On Thursday night, as Johnny launched a new CD featuring Ben, Ben’s brother Charlie, who lives in An Spidéal, and other musicians from around the North Leitrim village of Kiltychogher, he recalled those wise words.

Ben felt that too many musicians were so busy tearing through the tunes they were forgetting to savour the experience and something was being lost in the process.

Johnny recalled this and other memories of playing in Hughes’ with Ben, Charlie and his own later father, melodeon player Johnny Connolly, as he took the audience at Stiúideo Cuan on a trip down memory lane during the launch of Within a Mile of Kilty 2.

He also offered a special insight into the tunes and the styles of the musicians on the album: John Gordon, Ben Lennon, Charlie Lennon, Brian Rooney, Maurice Lennon, Séamus Quinn and Brian Lennon.
