Date Published: 18-Apr-2013

The inquest into the death of Savita Halappanavar has now concluded.

Proceedings have adjourned until tomorrow morning when it’s hoped a verdict will be reached.

Professor Grace Callegy was first to give her witness statement this morning and told the inquest that she carried out the autopsy on Ms. Halappanavar on 30th October.

She concluded that the cause of death was septic shock, e-coli infection and miscarriage at 17 weeks gestation associated with chorioamnionitis.

The inquest also heard that it was likely Savita had an ascending genital tract infection and hadn’t contracted it from another focus.

Retired consultant pathologist from the National Maternity Hospital in Hollis Street, Dr. Peter Keleghan was next to give his expert report.

He told the inquest that this case had classical appearances of septic abortion in the second trimester.

He said it was rarely seen by pathologists and that he had seen less than five cases in 40 years and none of these patients died, however in nearly all of the cases, the foetus did die.

The Coroner has now concluded the inquest after 7 days and will now prepare his summary.

It’s hoped a verdict will be reached by tomorrow.
