Galway Bay fm newsroom – The final day of the Galway Races summer fesival gets underway this afternoon.
The attendance figures took an upwards turn at Ballybrit again yesterday, after Friday’s blip.
Crowds had been up on last year for the first four days of the festival but the bad weather on Friday arrested the records.
The upwards trend was re-instated yesterday with the crowd of just over 13000 up slightly by 225.
The betting of 1.38 million euro was a substantial 114 thousand more than last year, given the marginal increase in punters.
The tote had the biggest gain with the turnover of 528 thousand up almost 138 thousand on last year.
The bookies total of 854 thousand euro was up, although the difference of 23 thousand was less signifiant.
In the weekend fashion stakes the winner of the Ladbrokes Lady In Red Competition, judged by former Irish international soccer star Kevin Kilbane, was Cathy Dillon from Westport in County Mayo.
She walked away with a €500 L.K Bennett voucher along with €500 in Ladbrokes vouchers.
Today is another afternoon meet in Ballybrit with an eight race card for the final day of the summer festival.
The first race is at 2.15 and there’s full coverage of all races on Galway Bay fm.
