Tuam playwright and actress Sarah Jane Scott will perform her debut one-woman show Appropriate at The New York Irish Center from next Monday, January 27, to Sunday, February 1, as part of Origin Theatre’s prestigious 1st Irish Festival.

Appropriate, which was first staged at Dublin Fringe Festival in 2018 as part of the developmental strand, Show in a Bag, was nominated for a Bewley’s Little Gem Award and went on to win a Lustrum Award for Excellence at Edinburgh Fringe 2019. It’s presented by Gúna Nua Theatre and produced by another Galwaywoman Jill Murray (of Galway Dance Project and Brú Theatre).

The Origin 1st Irish Theatre Festival is the world’s only festival devoted to producing the work of contemporary Irish playwrights from around the world. This year’s festival began earlier this month and runs until February 3.

Appropriate is a darkly comic tale of finding love in rural Ireland – it features a bride, Sorcha, who flees her own reception. Sorcha has loved weddings since childhood and just like all the other girls in the parish, she’s been dying for her own big day since forever and ever.
