Arts Week with Judy Murphy

Those moments of intimacy that are allowed to us at a time when we are obliged to stay physically distant are very important to Sara Joyce right now. Sara is directing Druid’s upcoming show, Sonya Kelly’s Once Upon a Bridge, which will be streamed live from the company’s Mick Lally auditorium from next Thursday to Saturday, February 11-13.

Creating theatre requires you connect and bond, even when touching isn’t possible, she explains.

Sara is in Galway for the duration and the Wicklow woman is happy to be living by the sea in a place she’s familiar with since childhood. Her father George grew up in Barna, went to secondary school in St Joseph’s (the Bish) and to college in what was then UCG, and the family visited frequently when she was younger.

Sara, who’s normally based in London, was happy to be at home in the Wicklow countryside during the first lockdown. She returned there in early December and moved to Galway last month to direct Once Upon a Bridge.

This warm, smart woman is really happy at being given the opportunity to direct Sonya Kelly’s new play, commissioned by Druid. It follows Sonya’s highly successful Furniture which made its first outing in 2017 as part of the Druid Debut series before going on to receive a full production the following year, followed by a national tour.

Sara has also had first-hand experience of the Druid Debuts, which are aimed at nurturing new writing. In July 2019, the graduate of Drama and Theatre from Trinity College directed Eileen Walsh in Shin-Aid, written by Eamann Breen. It centred on an Irish woman in London, trying to make sense of an event that shook the city.
