THE expected Galway goal bonanza failed to materialise.
There was no razzmatazz, either. The Tribesmen got the
job done, no more.
In reality we were never really going to learn too much about Galway’s Connacht and All-Ireland Championship credentials from a ‘no-win’ preliminary round outing at the Emerald GAA grounds in Ruislip on Sunday.
And so it turned out. London, as expected, were plucky but never looked like pulling off a ‘David versus Goliath’ upset; Galway stuttered and were unconvincing even with a healthy, if somewhat flattering, 11-points winning margin.
The one thing we did learn from the weekend’s mismatch is if Galway reproduces a similar lacklustre display again in four weeks, then they won’t beat Sligo. Manager Liam Sammon
knows it, too.
As he took refuge from the searing North West London sun in the tunnel after the game,
Sammon wiped a ball of sweat from his forehead, and sighed as he reflected on a peculiar match.
