SAMARITAN VOLUNTEER GROUP MEETS GALWAY OIREACHTAS MEMBERS
Date Published: 27-Dec-2012
Volunteers for the Samaritans have met with a number of Galway Oireachtas members to brief them on their work.
It follows the publication of the group’s Impact report this month which revealed that calls to the helpline were longer in duration and focused on more complicated and interlinked problems than ever before.
A group of volunteers from Samaritans has met with Galway TDs Noel Grealish, Michael Kitt, and Senators Michael Mullins and Trevor O’Clochartaigh.
Senator O’ Clochartaigh has called for debate on the supports available to those using the service and has arranged to meet representatives early next year to discuss how additional support can be provided.
The Samaritans have over 100 people providing support in Galway and have had a service here since 1976.
Key findings of the Impact report which covers the period from November 2011 to the end of October 2012, show that nationally over 412 thousand calls were received.
Almost 7 thousand people received face-to-face support from the group.
