Salthill seize the day
Salthill/Knocknacarra 1-12
St. Michaels 1-7
Tommy Devane in Moycullen
SALTHILL/Knocknacarra were crowned West GPC U19 Champions following thIs victory over neighbours St. Michael’s in an end-to-end contest in Moycullen on Saturday.
Overall, it was a thoroughly deserved victory for the Seasiders who finished the contest the stronger, hitting four late unanswered strikes in an energy absorbing sixty minutes. Those supporters that braved the cold misty conditions would not be disappointed with the fare on show as both sides deserve great credit for serving up a fully committed and quality final.
The sides went score for score in the opening 22 minutes with Mikey Maguire and two Gary Higgins frees for St Michael’s cancelled out by Salthill/Knocknacarra through Power, McGauran and Culhane.
The county under-age player edged Salthill/Knocknacarra in front before the winners struck for the opening goal when Power palmed home after good work from McGauran on 26 minutes.
St. Michael’s, however, responded impressively through Gavin Summerville with the point of the half, before McGuire was the first to react when a St. Michael’s free from Gary Higgins struck the crossbar and the wing forward made no mistake in finding the net to leave it all square in added time. Culhane’s third pointed free late on gave Salthill/Knocknacarra the edge at the break, leading by 1-5 to 1-4.
The winners would have a slight wind advantage for the second half and two excellent early points from play from corner forward Culhane widened the gap. Influential midfielder Hugh Gavin then opened his account to stretch their advantage to four points six minutes into the second half.
