Salthill edge out St Michael’s

How this game went ahead at all is a mystery given that most people wouldn’t have put a cat out in the heavy rain and bitterly cold wind at Mervue on Saturday.
Credit then, to both sides, who tried hard to entertain the large crowd that braved the elements, but for neutral observers there was little to quicken the pulse about this U-21 West GPC final that saw a below par Salthill side prevail in a tense war of attrition in wretched conditions.
The dearth of scores had nothing to do with the number of chances, however, as the two sides were guilty of some woeful misses with both sets of forwards finding the miserable weather and heavy underfoot conditions difficult to cope with.
Given that wides were the order of the day, it’s fitting that three misses provided the major talking points afterwards.
