Safety ‘the primary aim’ in design of busy new junction
THE €3.5 million upgrade of the Galway Clinic Martin Roundabout into a fully signalised four road junction will be ready to roll by the end of November, the City Council have confirmed this week.
However, they are likely to ‘hold fire’ on the start-up date as they consider the traffic implications of starting the project in the run-up to the Christmas shopping season.
Galway City Council Acting Director of Services in Transport, Uinsinn Finn, told the Galway City Tribune the project was currently out to tender with a ‘ready-to-go’ date for late November.
“We are only too well aware of the safety considerations relating to the current roundabout for pedestrians and cyclists with the primary aim of the new signalised junction to make it far safer for everyone.
“The timescale for the project from start to finish will be approximately six months which means that it should be completed by the Summer of 2022,” said Uinsinn Finn.
He outlined that the project would involve public transport prioritisation; the provision of cycle lanes; safe pedestrian crossings and enhancement measures; as well as traffic-calming steps.
However, Mr Finn said it would not be possible, in the meantime, to put in place temporary measures as regards an improvement of pedestrian crossing facilities.
