Galway 4-6

Dublin 2-6

GALWAY senior ladies’ footballers always have a performance like this in their locker and, yet, there have been times in the past when they have forgotten to bring the combination code to open the door and unleash it.

This, though, was not the case in this exhilarating LGFA National League Division 1 tie against Dublin in DCU last Sunday as the Tribeswomen arrived in the capital with nothing but intent on their mind and delivered a display that had the All-Ireland champions chasing shadows for most of the hour.

Both sides were much changed from the starting teams that faced each other in last September’s All-Ireland decider, with Dublin fielding six starters (and introducing a couple of more) while Galway had just five. Yet, by half-time, Tim Rabbitt’s charges were in fine fettle, leading 3-2 to 1-2 and by the three-quarter mark they had extended this advantage to 12 points, 4-5 to 1-2.

With the game played on a 3G surface, and in ideal weather conditions, the game took on a championship feel to it. The pace of the fixture was simply electric and, although both sides were guilty of some sloppy distribution at times, when the passes did stick, it was champagne football.

Cousins Roisin and Tracey Leonard with a combined total of 3-3 will grab most of the headlines and, yet, on this occasion, they could not be regarded as the chief orchestrators of this victory, which just goes to show how many players acquitted themselves superbly.
