Ruth adds new string to her bow!
If there was ever a person who is the living embodiment of Jonathan Swift`s instruction to ‘live all the days of your life’, it is Ruth Smith – the Galway native who, having conquered the world of music, is now enjoying acclaimed for her role on stage.
A born entertainer who does not believe in letting the grass grow under her feet, Ruth – the performer, presenter and musician, originally from Portumna, but now based in Feakle, in Co. Clare – is one of the stars of Once, the Oscar-winning movie now playing to packed houses at the Olympia.
She is in the final week of playing the role of ‘Ex-Girlfriend’ in the stage adaptation that has won a host of Tony Awards, on top of its original Oscar for the song Falling Slowly.
Produced by Landmark Productions, this run boasts the first all-Irish cast in a production of its kind.
It is very much an ensemble piece with all twelve actors on stage for the duration of the performance playing, dancing, singing and providing the choreographed scene changes.
As a multi-instrumentalist, singer, actor and dancer Ruth was made for the part.
No stranger to the all singing and dancing roles, Ruth performed alongside a star studded cast as part of the variety spectacular show Riot in the Spiegeltent during the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2016.
In addition, Ruth is one third of the female vocal and instrumental trio, the Evertides, with actor Ruth McGill and composer/sound designer Alma Kelliher.
Not only is Ruth an accomplished musician, she is also an experienced events manager and MC and has worked with the Volvo Ocean Race, the London Olympics and closer to home with the GAA, regularly appearing as MC to a full house in Croke Park.
And yet another string to her bow is presenting her own radio show ‘Simply Folk’ this summer on RTÉ Radio 1.
Even Jonathan Swift would be impressed with a CV like that!
