Rumbled raiders flee leaving stolen safe behind them
Date Published: 02-Feb-2011
The prompt action of a vigiliant neighbour forced thieves who broke into a North Galway shop and post office to abandon their plans and flee – leaving behind them a safe with an estimated €100,000 inside.
The well-planned raid on Caltra Post office and shop took place during the early hours of last Thursday morning last; the gang had a steel trailer and transport lined up outside to carry the safe with its contents away from the scene.
But having carried the safe halfway through the shop, they bolted and sped off at high speed leaving the safe in the middle of the floor and the steel trailer parked outside. The contents would have included the shop and petrol takings, social welfare payments, pension payments and children’s allowance.
Their abandoned raid was down to a neighbour across the road who had heard the noise and had alerted the Gardaí; but the raiders had departed the scene before they arrived.
