Rugged landscape is inspiration for Talún
Health, Beauty and Lifestyle with Denise McNamara
It is said that we are all products of our environment. A craftsperson who exemplifies this is Galway jeweller Lynsey De Burca. Lynsey grew up close to a pier between Ballinderreen and Kinvara and a lot of her work has been inspired by elements of the many piers dotted along the coastline.
“The pier was a treasure trove of boat chains, lobster pots and fishing nets. The images of them have stayed with me and inform my work to this day. From the composition of fishing nets strewn over a pier wall to the copper rust tones of boat chains contrasting against the silver tide – every element was an inspiration,” she reflects.
Her latest collection is called Talún, which means land ‘as Gaeilge’, was created in her studio at the bottom of her garden in her adopted home in Moycullen after spending hours immersing herself in the great outdoors during lockdown.
“I was able to take a closer look at our surroundings – to explore, to enjoy and to appreciate its features. I was captivated by the beautiful patterns and textures. Talún is a collection of textured raindrop link jewellery inspired by the western landscape. Walking in Connemara and through the Burren, I drew complete inspiration from the geology of the west of Ireland.
“Many long hours are spent making away in the studio – it is a happy place and often quite noisy – there is always a lot of hammering and forging. The last few years have been hectic; we have a young family, and the business has been rapidly expanding since then so it’s a juggling act.”
She describes these latest pieces as like drawings on the etched markings of crevices and cracks of the Burren limestone.
