Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Cathaoirligh of the Athenry-Oranmore, Ballinasloe and Connemara municipal districts will receive the maximum allowance of 6000 euro following some debate at meetings this week.
The members of each municipal district must agree on the amount to be paid to its chairperson.
Athenry Oranmore Councilor Jim Cuddy said the 6000 euro set aside for his district’s cathaoirleach would be better spent on roads, which he describes asuffering from an ‘acute shortfall.’
However, following a counter-proposal and vote, Cathaoirleach Peter Feeney will receive the maximum yearly allowance of €6000.
Meanwhile at the Connemara meeting, Councillor Tom Welby’s calls for the Cathaoirleach’s allowance to be spent on fire services was seconded by Cllr Seosamh O’Cuailain – but failed to receive sufficient support.
Cathaoirleach of the Connemara municipal district Seamus Walsh will also receive the maximum yearly allowance of €6000.
At today’s meeting of the Ballinasloe municipal district, councillors debated their cathaoirleach, Councillor Michael Connolly’s allowance before agreeing to pay him.
