Galway United’s Mikie Rowe who scored the only goal in their First Division away win over Cabinteely in a bad-tempered clash last Friday.

A scuffed goal just before the hour mark was enough to claim a win for Galway United in a poor game that threatened to boil over in the second-half, with both sides finishing the game with 10 men – and the home team lucky not to have had one or two more players sent off.

The opening half gave no indication of the drama that was to follow in the second period – the sighs of relief at the half-time whistle bringing a dire first-half to an end were soon replaced with groans at the realisation that we were still had another 45 minutes to endure.

At least there was a bit more to the game in that second 45 minutes, but it was mainly of the negative variety as the bad blood that has been brewing between the two clubs threatened to spill over completely.

Cabinteely are still furious at having a decision to award them a win over Wexford last season overturned on appeal by Wexford. There is a suggestion that elements within the Dublin club believe United pushed for, and bankrolled, that appeal – they didn’t – and matters went from bad to worse at the start of this season when United were awarded a 3-0 win after Cabinteely called off their meeting in April due to Covid-19.

Again, Cabinteely feel there were some dark forces in play connected with the West, while United were angered at the late hour of the notice the game was off – less than two hours before kick-off.

Tetchy relations soured further last Friday with a row between members of both backroom teams before the game, and this really needs to be nipped in the bud before it boils over completely.
