The village of Roundstone is preparing to celebrate Culture Night on September 19 with an eclectic and quality range of events.

Author Tim Robinson, a longtime resident of the Connemara village, will be displaying some of his paintings made in the 1960s which have not been seen since. This event will be at his studio, Folding Landscapes at the end of the Old Quay. Tim will also talk briefly about the work.

Folding landscapes will also host two more events on Culture Night. One of these is a talk by Queens University doctoral candidate Erin Hinson, whose art history research has shed light on previously unresearched Loyalist Arts and Crafts, produced in the Maze prison in the 1970s and 80s. Erin, an American art historian with roots in Roundstone, is researching the Loyalist cultural identity as expressed through creativity.

Her talk will be followed by a reading by best-selling author Liz Nugent whose debut novel Unravelling Oliver was a best-seller in Ireland and beyond. Liz will be in Roundstone to read from her novel and talk about her work.

Evening events at the Church of Ireland will include an exhibition and artists talk by Donald Teskey RHA, an artist who has had a long association with Connemara due to his collaborations with Ballynahinch Castle and its Occasional Press. Donald is one of Ireland’s most respected painters and his semi-abstract depictions of the Atlantic seaboard have become iconic images of the West’s wild and often unforgiving landscape. He will present an illustrated talk and exhibition.

Also at the Church of Ireland, there will be an evening with Belfast-based cellist and uilleann piper Neil Martin, a member of the West Ocean String Quartet. He has worked extensively as a composer for television, film and radio, including commissions for both RTÉ and the BBC.

An additional event after Culture Night on Saturday, September 20 will be an open-air painting demonstration and workshop with Mick O’Dea RHA in Roundstone. This will be a unique opportunity to work with one of Ireland’s finest artists in a beautiful and inspirational setting. Roundstone has had a long association with the visual arts, as its stunning natural and built environment has attracted painters for centuries.

Locations to be confirmed, places for all events must be booked in advance. For more information and bookings, contact 095 35811.
