There’s a treat in store when the Galway Film Fleadh and the Róisín Dubh bring John Reilly and Friends to St Nicholas’ Church for two shows on Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and Sunday 12.

John C Reilly is best known for his brilliant character acting in movies such as Boogie Nights, The Hours, Chicago, and Magnolia.  He has also starred as himself in an episode of The Simpsons.

In 2011, he recorded two songs produced by Jack White and released as singles by White’s Third Man Records: The Delmore Brothers’ Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar, performed with Tom Brosseau, and Ray Price’s I’ll Be There If You Want, performed with Becky Stark.  In 2012, his current band, John Reilly and Friends toured with the Railroad Revival Tour that included Willie Nelson and Family and Band of Horses.

Roots music encompasses a lot, he says, all of it worthwhile.

“It’s just another way of saying ‘good old music that has survived the passing of time’. Folk, traditional, bluegrass, close-harmony, country – whatever labels people have tried to stick to good music through the ages are irrelevant. It’s that song that touches something deeper, that makes ancient sense to your soul. The tree of music has deep roots which go back to these songs.”

It promises to be a good evening. Tickets €30 from roisindubh.net
