Rogers the hero as United advance in League Cup

GALWAY United have qualified for the quarter finals of the League Cup for the first time in a decade after defeating Sligo Rovers on penalties in the Showgrounds on Tuesday night.

In a game in which United were largely second best, goalkeeper Gary Rogers proved to be the hero, saving a penalty in the 86th minute to take the tie to extra time, and then penalties, when he came up with the goods again.

With the win coming just four days after United took a point from the Brandywell, the side look to be building a bit of momentum under new manager Jeff Kenna, and having won twice in cup competitions so far this season, they will now look to record a first win in the league when they host Finn Harps on Friday night.

In a poor first half, United had just a couple of half chances to open the scoring, but Mark Leech fired straight at Richard Brush in the 33rd minute, while James O’Shea’s shot from the edge of the box was always rising just before the break.

It was the home side who had the better of things in the ……………..
