Road gives way on Inis Mór

Locals on Inis Mór are concerned that a collapsed road on the largest Aran Island might not be reinstated in time for the busy summer season.

The road near Kilmurvey Beach collapsed about three weeks ago – it had been battered in winter storms and finally gave way.

Galway County Council has applied to the Office of Public Works for funding to have the road repaired.

Fianna Fáil Seán Ó Tuairisg says he hopes that OPW can make a swift decision on the funding request, so that the works can be carried out as quickly as possible.

He said that about a twenty-metre stretch of the road has collapsed, which means that there is now just one link to the western side of the island.

That one road is congested in summer with pony and traps, as well as mini-buses as tens of thousands of tourists visit Dun Aengus.
