Galway RNLI and a local lifeguard came to the rescue of a man yesterday after his canoe sank off Salthill.

The man, who is in his mid-30s, was hit by a large wave which capsized and sank the canoe shortly before 3pm.

He managed to swim to a nearby lobster pot where he hung on until help arrived.

A lifeguard from the Leisureland Centre swam out to assist the man and stayed with him until the Galway Lifeboat arrived a short time later.

The lifeboat crew took the two men on board and brought them back to the Lifeboat station in Galway Docks.

He was transferred him to Galway University Hospital where he was recovering last evening.
