Ring Road is the right idea – but the wrong route
Everyone agrees that Galway city’s traffic gridlock requires major action – but the chosen route for the proposed N6 Ring Road is not it.
That’s according to some of the 44 families set to lose their homes if the chosen route is approved, as they gathered at a public meeting in Barna.
Attendees came from across the city and county. And they all agreed on two points – that some solution was needed for Galway’s traffic gridlock, and that the chosen route was not the right one.
Local area councillor, Tomás Ó Curraoin, had called the meeting. He said he was shocked and stunned at the proposed location. “I didn’t think would they would ever take this route,” he said.
“Personally, I’m all for the road, but against the location. It’s a big worry, and I wake up on many mornings thinking of the people losing their houses. If they had a plan, they’d be able to relocate the people. There’s no plan for where they are to be put.
“There are people being driven off the land of their forefathers; there are people who came into these areas that bought these sites, lived in the area, it was their choice, and now they have to move. It’s very wrong.
“I know that in the old plan there were a few houses to go. Sadly, people’s lives, possessions, properties, and children come a long way behind other things.”
