HAVING been knocked out of last year’s championship by the same opponents, Craughwell were able to get a measure of revenge after seeing off Ahascragh/Fohenagh last weekend. An excellent performance from Tom Monaghan at midfield was key to the victory, but manager Brian Hanley will know there’s still room for improvement going forward.

As was the case in their opening round loss to Castlegar, the final margin of defeat was a little harsh on Ahascragh/Fohenagh. The east Galway side were outscored 1-13 to 0-7 in the second half, but they left themselves too much work to do with a very sloppy performance in front of the posts in the first half.

Ahascragh/Fohenagh were three points down at halftime, 0-10 to 0-7, but should have been at least that much in front. Kevin Ward’s side hit eight wides in the first 30 minutes and dropped another four efforts short. It wasn’t a case of the opportunities falling to the wrong men either, with Ahascragh/Fohenagh’s sharpshooters guilty of most of the spurned chances.

That wasn’t the case from the outset, however, as Ahascragh/Fohenagh made a bright start to the game. Shane Dolan opened the scoring for Craughwell but the sides were level again within 20 seconds with Pádraic Mannion doing well to claim Colm Freyne’s puckout before the sliotar was eventually moved to Cathal Mannion, who split the posts.
