Residents to battle nuns

LOCAL residents are mounting a major battle against plans by the Sisters of Mercy to develop a housing scheme worth €40 million on Taylor’s Hill, warning it will cause crippling traffic congestion.

And there have been calls on Galway City Council to purchase the grounds, which house the historic Lenaboy Castle, for visiting dignitaries. One local accused the nuns of “making a mockery” of the Preservation Order on the 19th Century castle, by constantly neglecting it.

The order has sought permission to develop 126 homes on a 12-acre site at St Anne’s Children’s Centre on Taylor’s Hill.

The development will consist of apartments, duplex units, townhouses, semi-detached and detached homes and will have access from Rosary Lane with realignment of the avenue to Lenaboy Castle.
