Galway Bay fm newsroom – Local residents at The Claddagh in the city are supporting a plan to create a new retails and community building in the area.

Cathríona Walsh has applied for planning permission to change a building at Upper Fairhill Road, from industrial use to a craft shop, garden centre and community room.

In the planning application Cathriona Walsh says the concept behind the Claddagh Cottage Crafts Centre is to provide a source of genuine, creative and innovative Irish crafts.

It’ll create employment for an average of 15 local crafts people at any one time, as well a minimum of 2 sales people.

Each artist or craftsperson would have their own display unit.

She also plans to dedicate a small outside area for one day a week to a garden centre.

There would also be a café and community room for charity meetings outside of business hours.

The City Council is due to decide on the proposal for The Claddagh in August.
