Residents fuming over hospital car park plan

The HSE West has said it intends to meet with concerned Shantalla residents before lodging a planning application for a car park at University Hospital Galway, which is feared may take up a portion of the area’s neighbourhood park.
Local area Councillor Colette Connolly (Lab) said that, at a meeting this week held by the HSE West to update councillors on development plans for UHG, hospital management presented plans outlining the take over of 0.3 hectares (about three quarters of an acre) of the Shantalla Neighbourhood Park, formerly the community pitch, to provide for 164 parking spaces for the hospital, which experiences parking problems on a daily basis.
According to Councillor Connolly, who is also the PRO of the Shantalla Residents’ Association, management indicated that a planning application for the car park would be lodged before Christmas, in order to avail of Government funds.
