Residents’ concerns over future of quarry site
Galway City Tribune – Menlo residents are up in arms over the sale of a quarry yard to a waste company, fearing that it could be turned into a commercial plant to store waste materials and dump trucks.
Sean Curran, the owner of Barna Recycling, purchased the property spread over 12 acres on Quarry Road which was previously used by Lackagh Quarries. The quarry closed seven years ago.
The site is fully concreted and includes a yard area, warehouses, outbuildings, silos and plant equipment used for concrete products.
It is zoned for agricultural use and had an asking price of €550,000, though it reportedly sold for less than €160,000.
Local councillor and resident Frank Fahy said he contacted Mr Curran who told him the site was bought in a personal capacity and he planned to use it for fixing trucks and the storage of truck-related parts.
Mr Curran did not return calls to the Galway City Tribune.
Cllr Fahy said Mr Curran had offered to meet a deputation of residents his plans, but no meeting has taken place so far.
