The incidence of self harm in the HSE West region is highest among 20 to 24 year olds.

That’s according to the half yearly report of the National Registry of Deliberate Self Harm issued by the National Suicide Research Foundation.

The report examines the first six months of 2012.

Nationally, over 6 thousand presentations were made to hospitals nationwide, and more than half of these were made by women.

However, this is 3 percent lower than the number recorded during the same period of 2011.

In the wake of the statistics, the HSE is planning to roll out 37 specialised nurses at hospitals nationwide in the coming months.

Dr Ella Aremsmam of the National Suicide Resarch Foundation says the trends in statistics supports such an important rollout.
