Local Government Audit Service figures for 2010 show Galway city and county councils are two of around 20 local authorities nationwide with accounts in the red.

According to the Irish Independent, Galway County Council was recorded as having an overdraft of 1 point 3 million euro while the city council had an overdraft of over 67 thousand.

Donegal has the highest overdraft nationwide at more than 12 point 7 million, followed by Sligo, Meath and Waterford.

The report from the Department of the Environment says "system-wide" changes are needed to bring council finances under control.
