A report on the response to the flooding and snow in Galway and other areas last winter, has found problems with communication, co-ordination and management.

The flooding hit many parts of the country towards the end of last year whilst heavy snow left drivers and commuters stranded over Christmas.

The Oireachtas Environment Committee says it is ‘very fortunate’ that lives were not lost in the extreme events.

It’s calling for a number of changes to improve efficiency including that the Office for Public Works be given responsibility for management of the River Shannon.

The Environment Minister is insisting his Department’s response to the flooding last November was handled with leadership.
