Galway bay fm newsroom – The HSE’s refurbishment on a mental health facility near Tuam was 20 times its budget limit.

The details are reported in today’s Irish Independent which obtained an audit report into the spending under the freedom of information act.

The report shows that 224 thousand euro was spent on furniture and crockery in 2011 despite having a budget of just 10 thousand set aside for this.

It also shows that some 92 thousand euro was spent on furniture, a further 86 thousand on floor coverings and almost 40 thousand on furnishings.

This included a sofa costing 17 hundred euro and a mirror costing 2 thousand 500 euro.

A decision was made in December to wind down the 18 bed residential facility, after a report revealed fire safety shortfalls.

In January, funding was sanctioned to address immediate fire safety issues enabling existing residents to remain there.
