Recycle electrical waste – for free

A big push on to properly dispose of old electric fence batteries free of charge.

FARMERS and householders in the north-east Galway area have been advised of special recycling days that are taking place over the coming weeks.

The free collection days are being organised by WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Ireland with the support of Galway County Council.

The first event takes place on this coming Saturday, April 15, at Loughrea Mart from 10am to 4pm while on the following Saturday, April 22, the venue will be the Mountbellew-Moylough GAA grounds, also from 10am to 4pm.

Similar type gathering days are also planned for Maam Cross and Gort in late April/early May for the free collection of goods such as old washing machines, TVs, toasters, kettles, electronic tools and toys, cables, IT equipment, mobile phones, remote controls, batteries, including farm fence batteries, and even watches.

In addition to that, WEEE Ireland have also launched an initiative with the agricultural sector to recycle all waste batteries – and especially farm fence electric batteries – as new collection targets are being introduced.

Around 10% of the overall batteries collected by WEEE Ireland are farm fence batteries, and last year it collected and recycled 125 tonnes, 15% more than the 108 tonnes collected in 2021.

Minister of State at the Dept. of Agriculture, Pippa Hackett, said this week that she was encouraging all farmers to have a quick look around their farmyard and collect up any used batteries and bring them to their co-op, or wherever they are buying batteries, the next time they are going there.
