Smear tests being carried out at University Hospital Galway for women in the south-east are being returned to doctors without the results because of the H-S-E’s recruitment freeze.

In a letter to G-Ps in the region, University Hospital Galway said the decision to discontinue the examination of the tests was forced by the embargo.

The HSE insists the tests will continue to be processed bu UHG despite the letter from the lab saying the service will end on November first

About 10 thousand tests are sent to U–H-G every year and are vital in detecting the early stages of cervical cancer.
