Recruitment ban is lifted for nurses
Nurses from Galway who are working in various parts of the world due to the recession have been told that there are now jobs at home for them.
The news will come as a great relief to some families who are angry over the fact that their children were forced to emigrate because of the lack of jobs in Galway
And now they have been encouraged to submit their CVs to University Hospital in Galway where recruitment will take place in the New Year.
Mothers of nurses who are working abroad have been asked to contact their daughters or sons to tell them that there are possible jobs for them at home.
It will come as a major boost to the many nurses who have returned to Galway for Christmas from Australia and Canada, where they had to emigrate to find work.
The Chief Director of Nursing with the HSE West, Collette Cowan, who is responsible for recruitment at hospitals from Letterkenny down to Galway City, has invited applications for posts in these areas.
There had been a ban on recruitment within the HSE but, in terms of nursing staff, this has now been lifted although Ms. Cowan did not specify how many posts are available.
“I would like to make a plea to mothers in the West that there are a lot of wonderful and really qualified nurses working in the UK and across the world and I would like to make sure that they will come back to Ireland and work in our hospitals.
“So I would be delighted if their mothers would remind them when they are home for Christmas to send me their CVs. I am looking for theatre nurses and critical care nurses. We want to recruit our own and bring them back to work to help our economy and help our patients,” she said.
