Re-opening of city centre pub creates 25 new jobs

A well-known city centre bar and restaurant – which closed down last Christmas – reopened at the weekend with the creation of around 25 jobs.The Cellar Bar on Eglinton Street closed down at the end of last year when the former owners’ chain of pubs and off-licences collapsed.

The pub has been refurbished and opened its doors on Saturday, with an official launch due to be held in the coming weeks

.New owner Michael Gilmore from Salthill – who also owns the Malt House bar and restaurant in Mountbellew – said around 25 new jobs will be created, including around seven or eight staff who were employed in the old business.

He will be joined by co-owner Martin Proulx, who has managed the Malt House for the last nine years.“

The bar had a very substantial food trade, and we are hoping to build on that, using our expertise from the Malt House, and will be bringing in some of our specialities from there,” said Mr Gilmore.

The new owners are also renovating the ‘cellar’ of the premises to rejuvenate it as a live music venue. In the meantime, there will be live acts upstairs
