Ray’s Rowing Record

A Salthill man who has been rowing the Atlantic Ocean for the last 30 plus days set a new world record when he and his crew docked in Barbados yesterday.

Ray Carroll set out in a 14- man boat from Puerto de Mogán in Gran Canaria in mid December and has been rowing the vast ocean in the 44-foot long open top rowing boat since in an effort to break the world record for the quickest transatlantic crossing.

The old record of 35 days and eight hours was set by a French crew in 1992, ironically in the same boat. However, Carroll and company smashed that record by a massive two days when they docked in Barbados.

Carroll, who contacted the Galway City Tribune from ‘La Mondiale’ row boat yesterday afternoon, said: “That sees us completing the crossing in 33 days and six hours, which is a new world record by nearly two days.
