Ravenous Mountbellew/Moylough in no mood to lose this time
By Eanna O’Reilly
FROM the outset of Sunday’s senior football championship final, it was clear that Mountbellew-Moylough were the side who were most intent on taking home the Frank Fox trophy.
Having lost four county senior finals in the last six years, Val Daly’s side had no shortage of hunger or desire to lay their final hoodoo to rest. Mountbellew-Moylough brought ferocious energy to the contest from the beginning, which Corofin really struggled to match on the day.
The pace of their attack was evident in the scores which put them 0-3 to 0-0 ahead in the first eight minutes of the game. Eoin Finnerty and Barry McHugh sent over points after possession was transferred with pace into the full forward line. John Daly then pointed after a quick free, when Liam Silke was penalised for touching the ball on the ground. Corofin were slow to react, which reflected their struggle to get to the pace of the game.
The twenty-one-time champions looked flat and laboured in possession. There was a lack of incisiveness in their attacking play, and they lacked the directness of their opponents. Each turnover came as a huge boost to Mountbellew/Moylough, whose confidence visibly grew during the first half.
Finnerty was a tremendous outlet for long deliveries as the focal point of their attack. Corofin really struggled to deal with the full forward and never managed to get a handle on him during the game. The winners also produced some highly impressive inter play in attack, underlined by two excellent scores from Michael Daly and McHugh. On both occasions, the ball was worked through the hands with a level of pace that Corofin couldn’t defend against.
