Randy Galway shoppers are spending around €250,000 each year buying adult toys online, according to a new survey.

But the bashful buyers are having their sex toys delivered to anonymous parcel motels rather than to their home or place of work!

The statistic is contained in new research by the ‘Parcel Motel’ service operated by Nightline Logistics, which found that Galway shoppers spend almost €130 million online each year.

While €250,000 is spent on sex toys, the majority of online spending is on clothing.

The survey of more than 6,000 shoppers found the average online spend per person is just under €680, while around €55,000 per day is spent here on online clothes retailers.

Nationally, more than €2.4 billion is spent online each year by Irish shoppers – Galway accounts for around 5% of this spend.

The research found the top three products being purchased online in Galway are clothing (€20m); consumer electronics (€16m) and mobile phones and accessories (€10.8m).

“Clothing was found to be the most popular product bought by Galway people when shopping online, with over €20m being spent yearly, almost €55,000 a day.

“This research has discovered a range of different eCommerce spending trends in Ireland, with consumers citing convenience and cheaper prices as the main reasons they shop online. Parcel Motel allows consumers to have their goods delivered to a location that is convenient for them to collect at any time through a nationwide network of self-service parcel terminals,” the survey reads.

The research also found:
■ Galway accounts for over 6% of Ireland’s total online expenditure on footwear annually, with Galway people spending over €23,000 a day online on shoes
■ Over €10million is spent annually on sportswear in Galway, accounting for over 8% of Ireland’s total online expenditure on sportswear
■ Galway spends €5.7 million annually on cosmetics and toiletries with an average annual spend per person of €30.16
■ €10.8m annually on mobile phones (nearly €30,000 per day)

The Parcel Motel service allows customers to collect packages at a time which suits them, as well as allowing them to use a proxy UK address to order from websites which do not deliver to the Republic of Ireland.
