Campaigners fighting to save cancer services at Sligo General Hospital which are to be scrapped under controversial government and HSE proposals are holding a rally outside University Hospital Galway today

They say that from January an extra 12,000 people a year will have to be seen at UHG – 7000 from Sligo and 5000 from Mayo

The HSE says the aim is to create a cancer centre of excellence by centraling all the services and expert personnel

However the lobby group say this will put a massive strain on UHG, which is not fair to Galway’s cancer patients given that the services already exist in Sligo and Mayo
