Raggle-taggle Eskies for Monroe’s Live

The Eskies come to Monroe’s Live on Saturday, June 6. The Dublin based five-piece released their debut album, After the Sherry went Round, last year. It was produced by Gavin Glass, who plays in Lisa Hannigan’s band.

“He’s a fantastic producer,” says lead-singer Ian Bermingham. “We’re a bunch of messers, so it’s not that easy to handle us.”

Ian plays guitar and sings in The Eskies, and the rest of the band are Tim George (bass), Steven Kearney (drums/vocals), Rob Murphy (mandolin/guitar) and Sean O’Reilly (guitar/vocals). Do the members write together or bring finished pieces into rehearsals?

“It depends on the song,” Ian says. “A lot of the time, one of us will write something then bring it to the rest of them. I’ll have a chord progression and what I think is a finished song, then I’ll bring it to the jam room, and it’ll totally change.”

“It’s leave the egos at the door,” Ian says. “If you come up with something and someone doesn’t like it, so what?  You come up with something else.”

What the Eskies have come up is very good indeed. This raggle-taggle, blues-infused folk messers are worth catching at the Dominick Street venue.

■ Doors at 9pm, tickets €10/€7 online.
