Radical plan for Headford Rd traffic

Concerns were expressed by councillors at last night’s meeting that proposals to solve the Headford Road’s traffic woes would only serve to exacerbate them. The radical plan put forward by traffic consultants would see the notorious Bodkin roundabout at the Galway Shopping Centre removed and replaced with a signalised junction.
The Headford Road would be transformed into a “boulevard-style” entrance into the city with bus and cycle lanes. The Dyke Road would be upgraded to join the Quincentenary Bridge instead of running under it.
Motorists would no longer to able to access the shopping centre from the Headford Road but would instead have to drive from Cemetery Cross on the Sean Mulvey Road on a new road which cuts across vacant land that has a recreation and amenity zoning. A new link road between the shopping centre and Galway Retail Park leading onto the Dyke Road is also proposed.
