Race for Tom Callanan Cup to be restricted from 2023
FEARS that Galway would have to cull eight clubs from the 2023 senior hurling championship have proved groundless.
Some local teams were braced for the prospect of demotion after Congress approved senior and intermediate championships being restricted to 16 clubs in two years-time.
Galway, however, will still have the opportunity of running off a separate Senior B championship even if those teams would be denied the opportunity of competing for the Tom Callanan Cup in the knock-out stages as is currently the case.
Senior B would instead be run off as a separate championship, with only the eventual winners gaining promotion to Senior A for the following year.
At present, there are 24 senior hurling clubs in Galway and that number is unlikely to be impacted by the Congress ruling . . . instead the county would opt for possibly12-team championships in both Senior A and Senior B.
