Quality and variety in store as January gets off on high note
Venues in Galway will be keen to dismiss the notion that January is quiet month. Among the fantastic shows taking place is one from Noelie McDonnell and his band in Monroe’s Live next Thursday, January 7.
Noelie’s song, Marakesh, recorded with The Cabin Collective, was included on A Whole Lotta Live, Today FM’s tribute to the late Tony Fenton. He has released three solo albums and is also a member of The Whileaways. Tickets €10/€8 online.
Canadian songwriter Lindi Ortega comes to Róisín Dubh on January 14. The Nashville-based artist has been nominated for a prestigious Juno in her home country, and her soulful songs are worth checking out. Tickets €12/€10
Speaking of soul, Matthew E White’s gig in the Róisín on Wednesday, January 20, could well be an early highlight of the New Year. White’s music is groove driven, subtle and very easy to listen to. Tickets €18/€16.
For fans of classic rock music, Monroe’s has two cover bands that are worth checking out. First up is No Stairway who play the hits of Led Zeppelin on Friday, January 15 (€10/€8). And have you ever asked yourself the question – what if Jim Morrison came from Mayo? Find out when Na Doirse come to town on Friday, January 22.
Finally, January closes with two superb acts. Villagers play the Black Box on Friday, January 29 (€25/€22.50) and, following his superb Arts Festival show, John Grant comes to Seapoint on Saturday, January 30 (€30/€28).
