Putting silver surfers in the digital picture
Free upskiling for the older generation in the area of technology, by teaching them how to use their own digital devices, is a new focus for Galway2020 in keeping with its aim to be intergenerational.
The one-to-one classes will begin this week, and will be given by volunteers on a Thursday night for four weeks.
The interest in such projects emerged at some of the speak-outs, held throughout the county, as part of Galway’s bid to become the European Capital of Culture in five years time.
Among the other suggestions were creating a YouTube channel to keep local heritage alive, and demonstrating skills that are dying.
‘121Digital’ is a project that trains adult learners on how to use their digital devices (eg. laptop/ smartphone/tablet), and was founded by Fintan Mulligan four years ago. There are currently programmes running in schools all around the country.
”As Galway 2020 is about bringing people together to share ideas and skills, I thought this would be a good programme to bring to the community and would also address some of the needs of upskilling the senior generation in technology,” says Galway 2020 volunteer Brenda Kennelly.
The idea is that learners start at their current level of knowledge, and progress at their individual pace. Their 121digital course is tailored to their needs – they choose the topics they want to learn, and the voluntary tutor works with them, one-to-one.
“Through 121Digital, learners find that they are more capable, in-touch, able to communicate digitally, try new apps, and are more open to learning new skills,” Brenda adds.
“Tutors have fun connecting with older adults and learning their story.”
Those giving the training come from a host of Galway 2020 volunteers, who are eager and willing to share their knowledge, and help bring this into the community.
The free classes will take place in the Galway 2020 Community Hub, which is located at the back of The Cornstore, which the entrance on St Augustine Street (opposite Citizens Information Centre).
They will run for four weeks, starting on Thursday (August 27) from 7-9pm. To book your place ring Brenda 086 8378063 or email kennellybrenda@gmail.com.
